UWE Project lead: Mian Ng
Partners: Daughters of Africa Foundation

Aims

To provide a 2-week of project delivery for 20 UWE students from across falcuties and departments.

To enable multidisciplinary practice and a clear understanding of collaborations across the university

To facilitate students subject learning at an international level

To provide an experience where students can connect their subject to professional activities in communities

To broaden students’ knowledge of global relations and and international project management for all students

Deliveries

550 participants from DOAF’s partner organisation took part / trained in the eight UWE led projects.

The projects took place in the local communities near Banjul and DOAF’s connections in Gambia.

Outcomes

Projects delivered successfully and with great impact on local communities

UWE students’ contribution in DOAF’s youth programmes enabled sustainable growth in the skills for the local communities

Students developed global leadership skills and also enabled knowledge exchange with the 18 DOAF youth leaders in the Gambia

A wide range of communities (from the Museum staff to the children in Abuko) benefited from the sustainable projects as the skills are shared and will be utilized. Accommodation at SOS Children’s village enabled the organisation to receive an income while hosting UWE students and staff.

Employability

Students who have been on the trip have been offered work/opportunities as a result.

Students feedback has been very positive. Their experience gave them tools and confidence to deal with problems/situations outside of their comfort zones

Inter-faculty participation enabled students across the disciplines to work collaboratively in joint up projects utilizing and maximizing specialists skills. This could be seen in the successful outcomes in the Museum and Archiving project (Students from History and Photography) , The Building project (Architecture and Fine Art), The environmental project ( Architecture and Graphic Design), Sports Rehab project ( Sports Rehab and Psychology)
